Explore the turbulent beginnings of the 20th century with this study guide for classroom and home education

This companion workbook to the Endurance graphic novel series has a wide range of topics that are easy to follow and understand. It will help the student explore a diverse academic and technical skillset that would mimic what a member of a polar expedition would need to master in order to survive: common sense, logic, map reading, decision making and problem solving.

The workbook also  highlights important qualities of human character. Whether it be honesty, integrity and self-sacrifice, or the darker sides of greed, anger and selfishness.

It will expand the student's understanding of the events of the early 20th century, which was an era of fundamental change in the West.  This period marked the end of the European Age of Discovery, culminating with the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration, which Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition--the subject of the Endurance series--was a part of. This generation marveled at the technological and scientific breakthroughs of the Industrial Age; lived through the geopolitical turmoil of Europe in the midst of conflict; and experienced the horror of mechanized warfare in the trenches of WWI.

The Endurance graphic novels and the companion study guide, The Endurance Series Workbook,  will make history  exciting and help the reader gain understanding of a pivotal point in humanity's story.

Designed for advanced middle grade to high school learners, this workbook is a companion to the historical fiction graphic novel series, Endurance, Book One: The Frozen Keep and Book Two: The Beckoning Shore. The graphic novel chronicles Sir Ernest Shackleton's quest to cross Antarctica in the years 1914-1916.

The questions in this workbook are designed to cover different levels of learning, from simple knowledge questions to in-depth evaluations of what students have read. You’ll find two types of questions:

Low-level questions: These ask students to recall facts, understand basic ideas, and apply those facts and ideas to different situations. These are simpler questions that help students build their knowledge.

High-level questions: Marked with a ship's scout icon. Students use their new-found knowledge to analyze the differences and similarities in ideas, evaluate and judge ideas, and create something new from the information they’ve gathered. These questions may require students to research and gather additional information, so make sure that internet access is available to them.

My hope is that you enjoy the adventure, and learn more about the world in which we live!
